La Peugeot 104 a été mise en production au cours du mois de Mars 1972. C'était alors la plus petite berline 4 portes vendue en Europe.

A l'époque, seule la Toyota Starlet était plus courte mais elle n'etait pas encore commercialisée en Europe.
